Healthcare Quality and Safety Improvement

The quality of care is one of the greatest concerns in Russian public health that requires a comprehensive approach. To address this issue, starting year 2013, IFH is launching a new priority program focused at healthcare quality and safety improvement.

In the framework of the quality improvement efforts, IFH will introduce best international standards into health facilities, increase providers’ knowledge and skills, and carry out an objective and competent assessment of care, building on its safety, efficiency and client-centeredness, which includes respect for the patients and satisfying their needs. The high-quality medical care should consist of coordination and integration of health services, information, communication, education, physical comfort, emotional support, involvement of families and friends, flexibility and continuity of care.

The IBP MCH project

The Institutionalizing Best Practices in Maternal and Child Health (IBP-MCH) Project is a three-year project (2009 – 2012)  was  implemented by John Snow, Inc (JSI) and the Institute for Family Health (IFH). The project builds upon successful experience of reproductive health and maternal and child health activities from previous USAID projects conducted by JSI and IFH at the regional level in Russia.

Modern approaches to providing care for women and children project

In June 2007 IFH won the grant of the Academy for Education Development (AED) to conduct a training workshop “Modern approaches to providing care for women and children” for health care providers of the Irkutsk region. This training course consisted of two parts, theoretical and practical, and covered international evidence-based approaches to preparing for childbirth and care during labor and delivery.

UNICEF Partnership

One of IFH’s priorities in the UNICEF partnership is to reduce mother-to-child HIV transmission and to advocate children’s rights. IFH and UNICEF have developed and republished materials on PMTCT, which are of great interest in Russian regions. Now IFH and UNICEF have established continuing partnership in this area.

UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund. The main goal of UNICEF activities is to protect and uphold the rights of every child to a safe, healthy, caring and happy childhood. In Russia, UNICEF operates in the following areas: early childhood, protection of children, youth health and development, and HIV/AIDS prevention. UNICEF supports the family as the best environment for any child.

In 2007, under cooperation with UNICEF, the Institute for Family Health analyzed and described all international projects in the field of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, implemented in the Russian regions. The results are presented in the informational and analytical report “Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission. Experience of international cooperation.”

Women’s Health Program

While implementing preventive programs, aimed at improvement of women’s health, IFH pays particular attention to prevention of cancer-related female mortality, especially related to breast and cervical cancer.

Healthy Lifestyle

Promotion of healthy lifestyle is one of IFH’s priorities.

In the framework of “Healthy Lifestyle” social program, IFH efficiently addresses the following issues:

·         Prevention of socially significant diseases

·         Promotion of healthy lifestyle

·         Combating alcohol and tobacco dependence

·         Prevention of sexually transmitted infections

·         Preventive programs at the workplace

IFH preventive programs are effective, sustainable and successful.  They are aimed at the population’s health improvement and advocacy of human rights and interests.

The Women Against Smoking Program

Smoking is one of main causes of mortality and disability of Russian people. Tobacco use leads to cancer, severe heart and lung diseases, reproductive disorders and other health problems. Disability and death of women due to tobacco-use has a negative impact on the whole family, including declines in standard of living and social security.

To meet this challenge, The Institute for Family Health is launching the tobacco-free gender-specific regional program “Women Against Smoking”, based on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and MPOWER in Khanty-Mansiysky Autonomous Okrug (KHMAO).
